The Edward Faithfull problem

‘Tree W’ contains entries for two cousins, both called Edward Faithfull and born in Southwick, who are born in 1845 and 1843 respectively:

1)

1.3.5.2.2.4.1.9.1.1.6 EDWARD brick layer.Ag lab Ipping 1881 census was TW A389

2)

1.3.5.2.2.4.1.9.1.3.3 EDWARD b 1843 Southwick in 1861 was servant un-m occupation carter house of John Barfoot farmer of 471 Acres*

The 1st Edward is the son of

1.3.5.2.2.4.1.9.1.1 JOHN

issue 1 ELIZABETH  2 JOHN 3 HENRY 4 CORDENE 5 JANE 6 EDWARD (Brick layer)

The 2nd Edward is the son of  John’s younger brother:

1.3.5.2.2.4.1.9.1.3 EDWARD WAS  008HC  1851 HANTS CENSUS Ag Labourer  LIVED AT 34 LOWER WEST, SOUTHWICK* Children ages taken from Census  was a widow in 1881 on his own

The 1881 and 1901 censuses contain entries for Edward born in Southwick, living in Iping (West Sussex) with his wife Caroline and children including Ada Mary and Ethel May. However, his age stated in these census entries indicate that he was born around 1843, not 1845. Both these entries describe him as a carter.

It therefore seems to me that Tree W may have confused these two cousins, and that it is the 2nd Edward born 1843 who subsequently married Caroline and moved to Iping.

There is no entry in either 1881 or 1901 census for an Edward Faithfull born in Southwick in 1845. Therefore, the other Edward must have died or emigrated before 1881.

Tree W could be wrong in one of the following ways:

·         The entries for each Edward are correct except that their ages are transposed; i.e. 1st Edward born 1843, 2nd born 1845.

·         The entries for each Edward are correct except that the wife and children shown for 1st Edward are actually the wife and children of the 2nd Edward; i.e. they are descendants of Edward b 1814 not his older brother John b 1812. In this case, all Tree W entries with numbers starting 1.3.5.2.2.4.1.9.1.1.6... must be changed to 1.3.5.2.2.4.1.9.1.3.3... and repositioned, and vice versa.

There is no compelling evidence for which of these suppositions is correct. However, I favour the second based on the evidence of occupations: the carter remaining a carter after moving to Iping, and the other bricklayers in the family are all in Southwick or Boarhunt.

I have therefore ‘corrected’ my database accordingly, on the balance of probabilities.
